Understanding school curricula: compare the actual pathway

A curriculum name is the beginning of an enquiry. The practical question is what this campus teaches, how the child progresses and which qualification the final years lead towards. Compare the pathway, its implementation and the fit with a possible future move.

STEP 1

Separate curriculum, qualification and school practice

A curriculum organises learning; a qualification records an assessed outcome; a school decides many details of teaching and daily experience. Those layers overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Two schools in the same national category can differ in subject choice, examination route, language support and the depth of feedback. An admissions conversation should identify all three layers.

Start with the authority category, then ask for the actual programme and examination information for the intended stage. Keep the campus identity attached to the answer. A group’s international website may describe opportunities unavailable at a particular branch. Ask which documents govern the current year and how parents are informed when a subject or pathway changes.

STEP 2

British pathways: inspect the stages and exam subjects

The British label alone does not establish an examination board or a complete route through the final school years. Ask how early and primary learning connects to secondary subjects, which examination specifications operate and what happens after the first major examination stage. Cambridge’s own description emphasises flexibility in programme implementation, so a programme name should not be mistaken for a fixed identical timetable everywhere.

For a student approaching senior study, obtain a subject list with prerequisites, entry conditions and possible clashes. Ask what happens if a class does not run. Clarify the school’s use of Year and Grade labels; apparent differences can require explanation rather than immediate conclusions about a missing year. Verify the actual qualification and current upper stage in writing.

STEP 3

American pathways: follow credits and diploma requirements

For an American-category school, investigate the standards taught, the sequence through middle and high school, the diploma requirements and the way credits are recorded. Ask how previous coursework would be evaluated for a transfer student. The existence of Grade 12 in a directory does not explain the whole graduation plan.

Where Advanced Placement is advertised, ask which courses operate, who can take them, whether examinations involve extra charges and how the courses relate to the student’s goals. AP study should not be treated as a substitute for understanding the school’s own diploma. University entry and UAE equivalency can involve destination-specific conditions; request current guidance for the intended graduating cohort rather than applying a general internet checklist.

STEP 4

IB: verify programme-specific authorisation

The IB offers different programmes for different stages, and a school must be authorised to teach an IB programme as an IB World School. A candidacy statement is not the same as that authorisation. Confirm the exact programme, campus and current status through the IB’s own information before treating an institutional ambition as an operating authorised pathway.

Then investigate how the programme works locally: language choices, subject availability, assessment support and progression to the next stage. Do not assume that offering one IB programme means the campus offers all of them. For a child moving between systems, ask how earlier learning will be mapped and which preparation is needed before entering the intended programme.

STEP 5

National categories: ask for the precise board and language

The Indian category does not, by itself, identify every school’s board, senior streams or subject choices. The same principle applies to Pakistani and other national categories. Ask for the exact board and the qualification route, then check the intended stage against the child’s previous learning. For French, German or other language-rich pathways, consider how a language transition affects participation in every subject.

For Ministry of Education schools, use the current study-plan information relevant to the child’s cycle and stream. The Ministry publishes a 2026–2027 Cycle 3 guide for public and private schools implementing its curriculum. That scope should not be silently extended to every private-school system. Ask the campus how its approved pathway and subject choices apply to the individual student.

STEP 6

Compare continuity, not national reputations

Work backwards from likely destinations while keeping the present child in view. If relocation is plausible, ask the possible receiving school which records and subjects matter. For university plans, confirm prerequisites with the intended institution. A pathway can be internationally familiar and still be unsuitable if the required subject is unavailable at the campus.

Build a simple progression map: current year, next transition, final qualification and likely destination. Add language, cost, support and subject choices at each point. Discuss the map with the school and retain unresolved questions. The strongest comparison is not “which curriculum is best?” but “which documented route can this child realistically follow, with suitable teaching and support, from here to the next decision?”

Questions that deserve specific answers.

Record the answer, its source, the date and what remains unresolved. Do not treat an undocumented conversation as an individual institutional commitment.

  1. What is the exact programme and board?
  2. Which subjects operate at this campus?
  3. What final qualification and credits are required?
  4. Is a claimed IB programme authorised or a candidate?
  5. How would a future receiving institution assess this route?

Transferring schools: protect continuity before changing campus

A successful transfer is an organised handover of learning, records and relationships. Secure the receiving school’s requirements and a workable transition before assuming a change of campus will solve the original difficulty. This guide provides planning questions, not a universal document or legal checklist.
